In a recent claim, we were reminded of the difficult work that our Police Force has to do, and the toll it takes on them and their families.
It was also a reminder of the gap in cover in some instances that officers find themselves. This recent claim, in which the details have been changed for obvious reasons, had the Officer suffer from mental illness and was no longer fit for the job they were suitably trained and experienced in.
They had worked in the Police Force for over 20 years and from a variety of reason relating to family, relationships and stress, suffered from anxiety and depression. Something which is becoming common in Australia.
The difference is that even though their employer did everything they possibly could to help, it was not a workplace condition, therefore was not able to claim on workers compensation, leaving them in a range of strife.
The ongoing treatment has been expensive, time consuming, and of course taxing on their family. Thankfully, an income protection policy was taken out prior to suffering the mental health condition, and was able to claim (albeit partial of their income due to not updating increases in income) until fit to begin their own business in a non-related field.
The moral to the story is that it isn’t always something that can be seen to change the direction of your life. Physical injuries happen, but injuries of the mind are something that are of equal importance to take into account when making sure you and your family are protected.
After years, we can now access income protection to our Police Force at standard rates.
