REAL LIFE STORY
Who is Phil?
Phil is a 48 year old, self-employed plumber from Perth. He has a wife and two teenage children.
What happened to Phil?
As a plumber, Phil has worked in some quite hazardous worksites during his career. Four years ago, Phil slipped while on the job and suffered a nasty fall. While the initial injury was not that serious, he contracted an infection while in hospital which lead to further complications and eventually surgery to his lower leg was required.
Post-surgery, Phil’s recovery didn’t go as well as expected. Despite regular physio sessions, he continued to have ongoing issues with the injury which made going back to work difficult. Phil underwent further operations but to no avail, the pain was still too much for Phil to continue his work as a plumber.
Where is Phil now?
Phil successfully claimed his Income Protection benefit with TAL and has so far received a regular income for the past 2.5 years. His benefits are payable until he reaches age 65, subject to an on-going assessment.
Under his doctor’s advice, Phil closed his plumbing business due to his on-going leg issues. While obviously devastated having to give up his job, he acknowledged that without having insurance and the regular income it provided, his situation would very much dire.
